UN Climate Change Conference – United Arab Emirates
Dubai, UAE
November 30 - December 12, 2023
Overview
Between November 30 and December 12, The International SeaKeepers Society participated in the 28th Conference of Parties, COP28, in Dubai — a significant event marking the first assessment of global progress since the adoption of the Paris Agreement at COP21. The primary focus was on coordinating efforts for climate action and addressing gaps in progress.
The ocean, vital for regulating Earth's climate, took center stage as the Ocean Pavilion Partners introduced the COP28 Dubai Ocean Declaration. This declaration urged world leaders to support and enhance global ocean observations. SeaKeepers recognizes the yachting community's crucial role in responsibly stewarding natural resources, supporting marine research, adopting sustainable practices, and educating communities on marine conservation. Oceans, essential to Earth, house half of the global population within coastal zones, with ocean-based businesses contributing over $500 billion to the world's economy.
Our participation in this global gathering aimed to advance our mission of ocean conservation, research, and education. During the 'Responsible Yachting Today & Tomorrow' presentation, Nicholas Lapp shared his vision of clean boating and introduced Sunreef Yachts Eco, emphasizing the latest marine green technology and a holistic approach to the future of superyacht construction.
We engaged with Protein Evolution, a part of Stella McCartney & LVMH’s exhibit, showcasing their innovative Biopure™ technology for biological recycling of polyester waste. SeaKeepers takes pride in its Educational Outreach program, and attending the panel on "Turning Generation Z's Passion for Climate Issues into Action" underscored the importance of providing scientifically accurate information to empower the youth in building solutions for tomorrow.
A notable panel, "Nature Opportunity" by the Oliver Wyman Forum, featured speakers discussing the interdependence between nature and climate. SeaKeepers believes that our connection with nature should form the foundation of our climate strategy.
Post COP28, there is a growing momentum to take the right actions, and SeaKeepers is committed to answering the call to action. As one panelist aptly stated, "When you're in a hole, stop digging." It is time to cease further degradation of nature, recognizing that our natural environment profoundly influences our climate. Collaboration, partnerships, and accelerated scientific efforts are essential, and SeaKeepers is ready to contribute to this collective effort.
Outing Goal
Engaging in the dissemination of SeaKeepers' global mission, which is centered around ocean education and research, underscores our commitment to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the marine environment on a worldwide scale. By actively sharing and promoting this mission on a global-scale, we aim to contribute significantly to the advancement of our mission to "Research. Educate. Protect and Restore." Our dedication to facilitating ocean education and research initiatives reflects a steadfast commitment to the responsible stewardship of our planet's vital aquatic resources, ensuring their preservation for current and future generations.
