Wildscapes Unveiled Mural and E-Workbook Launch Event
Miami, Florida
January 27, 2024
Overview
On Saturday, January 27th, 2024, The International SeaKeepers Society’s Education and Outreach team partnered with the talented artists at Canvas of the Wild, to launch the “Wildscapes Unveiled” educational outreach project at Overtown Youth Center in Miami, Florida. Through this event, SeaKeepers and COTW invite South Florida students and educators to explore three vital native environments; the Everglades, Mangrove Forests, and the Western Central Atlantic Pelagic. Over 75 elementary students attended the launch event and had the opportunity to learn about these habitats through three interactive displays with embedded touchpoints that link to species and habitat information on the Canvas of the Wild knowledge base. Activity pages from our new e-workbook accompanied the murals, which guided students and teachers through each featured habitat display and provide supplemental curriculum for educators to continue to use throughout their careers. This event served as the public launch of the murals’ availability at OYC as well as the public availability of the e-workbook on the SeaKeepers website for use in education.
Outing Goal
We hope that the students and educators who attended our launch event learned more about the featured South Florida Ecosystems and the animals and plants that call them home. The mural pieces will be on public display at Overtown Youth Center for use in educational events, and the student and teacher editions of the e-workbook with dozens of activities targeted for 3rd-5th grades is available for free download at seakeepers.org.
